In an effort to expand its economy, Pueblo has constructed an industrial park and has worked towards redeveloping its downtown center. The major employment sectors within the city of Pueblo are education, government, construction, healthcare and the leisure and hospitality. Service jobs provide more than 80 percent of jobs. Lots of people are still employed in steel fabrication. Newer sources of jobs consist of manufacturing, telemarketing call centers, electronics and aviation businesses. Many Pueblo residents commute to the Colorado Springs region for work.

Other significant employers include the County of Pueblo, Pueblo School System, Convergys Corporation, Trane, Walmart and Rocky Mountain Steel Mills.
