The city is along the Appalachian Mountain fall line, similar to many of colonial America's earliest settlements. The fall line is the spot where the many of the rivers become more difficult to navigate when sailing upriver. It is also the location farthest downstream where often falling water can be utilized to power a mill.
Columbia has a varied economy, with its main companies: state government, Blue Cross Blue Shield of SC, the Palmetto Health Hospital system and the University of South Carolina. In addition, the U.S. Army's 2nd biggest training facility, Fort Jackson, is also situated in the city of Columbia.

Just across the river is the botanical garden. This 70-acre or 280,000 m2 botanical garden is devoted to woodlands, plant collections, gardens and historic ruins.
