The city of Columbia is the county seat of Richland County, even though a part of the city of Columbia does extend into nearby County of Lexington. The name Columbia originated from Christopher Columbus as a poetic term meant for the Americas.
Columbia is located 13 miles or 21 km northwest of South Carolina's geographic center. It is the main city of the Midlands area within the state of South Carolina. This area comprises several counties within the central section of the state. The city is situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Saluda River and the Broad River which merges at the city of Columbia and forms the Congaree River.
The South Carolina General Assembly created the city of Columbia during the year 1786. The city's location was vital to the overall growth of the whole state. For example, the Congarees was a frontier fort situated on the west bank of the Congaree River and was the head of navigation in the Santee River system. During the year 1754, a ferry was established by the colonial government to connect the fort with the growing settlements situated on the higher ground of the east bank.
The city is along the Appalachian Mountain fall line, similar to many of colonial America's earliest settlements. The fall line is the spot where the many of the rivers become more difficult to navigate when sailing upriver. It is also the location farthest downstream where often falling water can be utilized to power a mill.
Columbia has a varied economy, with its main companies: state government, Blue Cross Blue Shield of SC, the Palmetto Health Hospital system and the University of South Carolina. In addition, the U.S. Army's 2nd biggest training facility, Fort Jackson, is also situated in the city of Columbia.
There are numerous company headquarters located in Columbia like for example SCANA, a Fortune 500 company as well as a major supplemental insurance company known as Colonial Supplemental Insurance. Moreover, Spectrum Medical, an international medical software corporation and a software development firm, Collexis Holdings Inc. are located nearby. First Citizens Bank, one of the biggest banks within the state of North Carolina, as well as a major national law firm referred to as Nelson Mullins have their head offices within the city as well.
There are other major manufacturers with facilities within the city of Columbia, like CMC Steel, Square D, Honeywell, International Paper, Spirax Sacro, Trane, Pirelli Cables, Westinghouse Electric, Solectron, and Harsco Track Tech. The Columbia region consists of over 70 global affiliated companies.
Amongst the best assets in the region is the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. This is a sanctuary for over 2000 animals. These creatures are housed within natural habitat exhibits along the Saluda River. Just across the river is the botanical garden. This 70-acre or 280,000 m2 botanical garden is devoted to woodlands, plant collections, gardens and historic ruins.
