Flagstaff is named after the Ponderosa Pine flagpole which was made by a scouting party from Boston who was called the "Second Boston Party." This was made on the 4th of July, 1876, to celebrate the US Centennial. Flagstaff is the county seat of Coconino County.
The city is found just south of the San Francisco Peaks, nearby Mount Elden. This is the highest mountain range within the Arizona state. In Kachina Peaks Wilderness, Humphreys Peak is situated, about 10 miles or 16 km north of the city, and it forms the highest point within Arizona State at 12,633 feet or 3850 meters.
The economy within Flagstaff was originally based on ranching businesses, lumber and the railroad. Flagstaff now remains a vital distribution center for businesses like Purina PetCare, Nestle and Walgreens. Flagstaff is also home to the United States Naval Observatory, Lowell Observatory and the USA Geological Survey Flagstaff Station as well as Northern Arizona University. There is a strong focus on tourism within the city of Flagstaff due to its close proximity to the Arizona Snowbowl, Oak Creek Canyon, the Meteror Crater, the famous Route 66 and the Grand Canyon National Park. The city is home to W.L. Gore and Associates, that is part of the medical device manufacturing sector.
The city's biggest employers are the Flagstaff Medical Center, the Northern Arizona University and the Flagstaff Unified School District. Replacing the once main industries of railroad, lumber and ranching are the present major economic industries of education, transportation, tourism and government. Over 5 million visitors travel through the city every year too. There are a variety of restaurant and hotel chains which are fairly successful within the area due to all of the tourism which the Grand Canyon generated. There are 2 historic hotels located in the downtown area: the Hotel Monte Vista and the Weatherford Hotel.
Amongst the famous high tech scientific research and development operations in Flagstaff consist of the United States Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station, referred to as NOFS, the Lowell Observatory, the USGS or also called United States Geographical Survey's Flagstaff Campus and Northern Arizona University. Lowell Observatory is a popular tourist's center and an active astronomical observatory. They host tours and educational displays. They offer a distributed network of small telescopes which all together, provide images of celestial bodies with a lot higher resolutions than produced by any other single telescope. Some of the existing research is involved in observations of near-Earth phenomena including comets and asteroids.
